Hyderabad may not have found a mention in finance minister Pranab Mukherjees budget speech this year, but tucked away in the fine print of the budget document was a Rs 10-crore grant for the proposed campus of Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) at Gopanapalli here.
The grant will facilitate the setting up of the TIFRs second campus outside of Mumbai. Mooted two years ago during the reign of late chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, the TIFR campus is slated to come up at a proposed investment of Rs 2500 crore over a period of 12-15 years in two phases.
Around 200 acres of land has already been allocated for the campus within the University of Hyderabad campus. The move is expected to strengthen Hyderabads standing as a world class R&D hub.TIFR is an autonomous institute under the umbrella of the department of atomic energy, government of India, and is engaged in basic research in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics and computer sciences.
Though TIFR,which was established in 1945,has smaller campuses in Pune and Bangalore for dedicated disciplines and has research facilities in other parts of the country, the Hyderabad campus is the only second integrated campus outside of Mumbai.
It is expected to have a permanent faculty strength of 200 along with nearly 1000 students and 300 post doctoral researchers as well as 400 technical and 500 nontechnical staff by 2020.
