An international hospital is all set to come up in the Health Port of the Shamshabad airport SEZ.The hospital would be a joint venture between infrastructure conglomerate GMR and health institutions Apollo Hospitals and Mayo Clinic,which would also mark the premier health clinics foray into India.Earlier this year,Mayo reportedly made an entry into China collaborating with a Chinese diagnostic service major,Kindstar.The international hospital in the airports vicinity would give wings to the citys medical tourism dream.
Top officials of Apollo Hospitals,including its chairman Dr Pratap Reddy,executive director Sangeeta Reddy and its CEO (central zone) Dr Hari Prasad are currently in the US,a visit which is being speculated in the industry to give the final touches to the joint venture. Pratap Reddy has on previous occasions avoided questions about the joint venture since the deal was still in a preliminary stage and also because Mayo Clinic had not made any statement about it so far.
The upcoming facility would be a multispecialty hospital catering primarily to foreign nationals.Those in the know say that the hospital is being designed on the lines of hospitals in Bangkok that cater only to foreign clients.The idea is accessible treatment since patients wouldnt have to get into the hassle of entering the city.
In September,a Mayo spokesperson reportedly said that the premier medical institution was engaged in talks about a possible collaboration to build a medical site in India.In its statement,the spokesperson had said that Mayo Clinic was committed to serve patients and medical providers around the world by sharing our knowledge in new ways,improving global health and advancing healthcare delivery.The Health Port is expected to draw an investment of close to $ 1 billion from GMR.
The facility would be one of the largest such set ups in Asia.It would not only lead to optimal utilization of the area around the airport currently lying vacant but is also expected to benefit the airports business,with an international quality healthcare centre in its vicinity and thus attract many foreign guests to the city.
Mayo Clinic is a not-for-profit organization that runs a number of clinics,hospitals and medical research facilities and schools in different parts of the US.Mayo is based in Rochester. The Mayo Clinic health system operates hospitals in Arizona and Florida as well as a network of hospitals and clinics in Minnesota,Wisconsin and Iowa.
However,both Apollo and GMR refused to comment on the joint venture.While the concerned Apollo officials were not in the country to make a statement,a GMR spokesperson said,At present,there is no information to share.
