The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) will introduce green channel for granting building permission for high-rises within two weeks.
Empanelment of engineers and architects would be taken up on the lines of Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA),GHMC commissioner MT Krishna Babu said on Thursday.
Speaking at the GHMC general (ordinary) council meeting, the commissioner said stern action would be taken to prevent illegal constructions.GHMC has been demolishing only ongoing unauthorised structures. Buildings that have already been constructed illegally are being slapped additional property tax besides levying hefty penalties in accordance with rules, he added.
Responding to questions raised by corporators, the commissioner said 25% additional property tax was being collected from the owners of illegal constructions and similarly tax on commercial properties is being enhanced under (GO 88) after lifting the cap.People who regularised their illegal constructions under the Building Penalisation Scheme (BPS) proceedings would be exempted from additional tax.The corporation has suo motu started checking cases where people got property tax notices with demand of over Rs one lakh, he said.
Several corporators alleged that special budget was not given to them, and as a result, they could not take up development works in their divisions.Mayor B Karthika Reddy said developments were not stopped in any area as the local MLAs and MPs were allocating funds from their budgets in their respective areas. When we visit localities,we are flooded with requests from residents to attend to certain works on a priority basis. To fulfill such requests corporators should be given a special budget, Riyasatnagar corporator Saleem Baig and Himayathnagar corporator Hemalatha said.
Explaining the delicate financial position of GHMC,Krishna Babu said efforts were being made to increase revenue by tapping unassessed properties and uncovered areas without enhancing taxes.During 2011-12,63 municipal divisions got less than Rs one crore maintenance and development works and the remaining 87 divisions got works over Rs one crore. The divisions which got less works would be given top priority and sanctions would be given by month-end, the commissioner said.
