Hyderabad News.State fixes Jan deadline for Metro Rail takeoff

(Excl Ventures News.)If the state government has its way, new year 2011 will see the beginning of the construction of the much-awaited Hyderabad Metro Rail. The state cabinet on Friday discussed the progress on the project and directed the Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department to go full steam on the acquisition of land and ensure that the January deadline is adhered to.
As per the deliberations in the cabinet, the Metro Rail project requires a total of 269 acres. Of this, 61 acres is government land while of the 208 acres of private land, exactly half has to be acquired in Miyapur and the other half in Nagole.
Officials of the Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) told TOI that it is already in a position to hand over the necessary land for Larsen & Toubro, the construction and engineering conglomerate that has bagged the project, to begin the construction work by the beginning of next year.
"Of the 269 acres of land needed for the project, only 57 acres is required for the construction of terminals and stations. We have already acquired more than 60 per cent of this and would be in a position to complete the process by the year-end. The remaining 212 acres needed for the project is for the construction of depots. That process we will begin now in right earnest. The project is on course," said a senior HMRL official.
According to sources, the HMRL board is slated to meet on Saturday and ratify the decision awarding the project to L&T. A formal announcement on the private partner in this public-private partnership initiative will be announced after that.
Over the next few weeks, the government committee headed by HMRL managing director N V S Reddy will scrutinise the bid and financial documents submitted by L&T after which the concessional agreement will be signed between the two. "Unlike what happened with the Maytas Infra-led consortium, the project will proceed without any hitches this time," the official claimed.
